Hello! My name is Noah Dear, and I'm excited to be your instructor this term! Please feel free to address me as Noah throughout the term.
I've been a math instructor at PCC since 2012 and have taught classes from MTH 20 through MTH 261 - almost every course we offer here! - over that time-span. I've also taught at all four campuses during that time but have made the SE campus my home for two years now. Working backwards, I graduated with my Masters degree in Mathematics from Portland State University in 2013, where I focused on Abstract Algebra and Dynamical Systems. I did my master's project on the mathematics of origami, as one of my passions is bringing mathematics and art together to create beautiful things!
I went to the University of Oregon where I got my BS in mathematics with a minor in physics - yup, I'm into physics as well! I think one of the coolest things I did there was create a circuit board that emulated the game Mastermind. Well, that and I built a 17' tall trebuchet to launch pumpkins with :)
Before that, I was a student at Portland Community College where I found my passion for teaching mathematics when I started tutoring mathematics at the Cascade Campus back in 2007.
By now you may have guessed this, but I'm from here. Meaning I grew up in Oregon City, graduated from Oregon City High School, and then went to the Art Institute of Portland (I told you I love art and math!) for computer animation. However, I dropped out of college when I was 19 because I needed to grow up a bit before being ready for college. A trip around the country for 6 months in a VW Bus when I was 22 finally ended with me deciding to go back to school and I'm so very happy I did!
My hobbies include (but are not limited to) origami, spirograph art, and climbing. I think it would be really cool to get into designing symmetry in 3D art and have been seriously considering taking a Solid Works course to be able to begin designing in that venue.
Hope this gives you a little peek into who I am. I'm excited to learn about who you are too!
Best,
Noah Dear
